Alarm monitoring

Do I Need a Landline for My Alarm System?

Short answer: no. Many Toronto homes have cancelled their landline, and modern alarms do not need one. Here is how cellular monitoring works, why it is the better choice, and what to do if your alarm still depends on a phone line.

The short answer
  • You do not need a landline. Modern alarms send signals over the cellular network.
  • Cellular cannot be cut from outside the house the way a phone line can.
  • Older alarms on a landline can usually be upgraded with a cellular communicator, without replacing the whole system.
  • Cancelling your landline without upgrading the alarm means your monitoring stops working.

How an alarm talks to the monitoring station

When your alarm goes off, the control panel has to send a signal to the monitoring station. For decades that signal went over the home phone line. Today most systems use a cellular communicator: a small radio inside or next to the panel that works like a cell phone dedicated to your alarm.

The alarms we install communicate over the cellular network as standard. Landline monitoring is still available if you prefer it, but most homeowners no longer need it.

Why cellular is the better choice

  • No wire to cut. A phone line enters the house on the outside wall. A cellular signal has nothing outside to cut.
  • Works when the power goes out. The panel and communicator run on the system's backup battery.
  • No phone bill needed. You can cancel the landline without losing monitoring.
  • Faster signals. Cellular communicators send alarms quickly and regularly check in with the station, so a problem with the connection gets noticed.

Before you cancel your landline: check how your alarm communicates. If it still uses the phone line, cancelling it means your alarm can no longer reach the monitoring station, and you may not notice until the day you need it.

What about internet-based alarms?

Some systems send signals over your home internet. That works, but your internet modem usually loses power during an outage and can be unplugged. Cellular is the more dependable main path. Some systems use both, with one backing up the other.

My alarm still uses a landline. What now?

You usually do not need a new system. Most alarm panels can take a cellular communicator. We install it, connect it to the panel, test it with the monitoring station, and you can cancel the landline.

  1. We check your panel We confirm the model and that it can take a cellular communicator.
  2. We install the communicator Usually a short visit.
  3. We test with the station We send test signals to make sure every alarm type gets through.
  4. You cancel the landline Only after the test is complete.

If your panel is very old, replacing it may make more sense. We will tell you honestly which option is cheaper over time. Switching your monitoring to Blaze Alarms is generally free unless a part like the control panel has to be replaced. See how switching works.

What does cellular monitoring cost?

Cellular is our standard, and dropping the landline saves you that phone bill. Ask for a written monthly price that includes everything. Our guide to monitoring costs in Toronto explains what to look for.

Frequently asked questions

Will my alarm work if I cancel my landline?

Only if it already communicates over cellular or internet. If it uses the phone line, it will stop reaching the monitoring station. Check first, or ask us to check.

What if there is no cell signal in my basement?

The communicator can usually be placed where the signal is strong, and it uses its own antenna. We test the signal during installation.

Does cellular monitoring work during a power outage?

Yes. The alarm panel and the communicator keep running on the system backup battery.

Can I upgrade my existing alarm to cellular?

In most cases, yes. A cellular communicator can be added to most panels without replacing the whole system.
